Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights

VRThe Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights is the body of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, which exercises parliamentary control over the observance of constitutional human and citizens’ rights and freedoms in Ukraine (the ombudsman institution).

The purposes of the parliamentary control over the observance of constitutional human and citizens’ rights and freedoms exercised by the Commissioner are:

  • protection of human and citizens’ rights and freedoms envisaged by the Constitution of Ukraine, the laws of Ukraine and international treaties of Ukraine;
  • observance of and respect for human and citizens’ rights and freedoms by subjects indicated in Article 2 of this Law;
  • prevention of violation of human and citizens’ rights and freedoms or the facilitation of their restoration;
  • facilitation of the process of bringing legislation of Ukraine on human and citizens’ rights and freedoms in accordance with the Constitution of Ukraine and international standards in this area;
  • improvement and further development of international cooperation in the area of the protection of human and citizens’ rights and freedoms;
  • prevention of any forms of discrimination in relation to fulfillment of person’s rights and freedoms;
  • promotion of legal awareness of the population and protection of confidential information about a person.
